Hi I’m Amy and I haven’t Blogged in FOREVER… Hopefully You Didn’t Forget Me!

So where to start?….Well, as you can tell I’m not one to really blog. For several reasons really. The most obvious reason is because I hate to write.  If you have ever been a client of mine, you know I’d rather talk or speak to you rather than text or write an email. And if you have ever met me IRL, you probably know I’m a Chatty Cathy and have the gift of gab!  Anyway, last year I took a step back from my business to completely focus on my personal health.  My physical and spiritual health to be exact.  I told myself that 2018 was going to be completely dedicated to my health, my personal well being and overall happiness.  I didn’t have the joy and spark I once had in my life.  I threw myself into working out and getting myself back to a person I once again recognized.

I entered 2018 at the heaviest I have ever been in my life.  My personal trainer was opening her own gym, which I honestly has been life changing.  I was interviewed by the local news, which was doing a spotlight on fitness and the new years resolutions that came with it. The reporter asked me what my personal goals were in the new year and to be quite honest, which I always am, my answer was quiet vain. “To wear a crop top” And from there #croptop2018 was born.  I worked out everyday sometimes even taking 2-3 classes on a particular day, and with every workout I would document it, check in on Facebook and EVERY SINGLE TIME I did I used the #croptop2018.  It was a way to keep myself focused, hold myself accountable and let the world know that I was here to do crush goals.

I documented my weight lost.  With monthly weigh ins, along with accompanying photos (talk about really putting myself out there).  But the overwhelming response of support and love not only with my friends and family but from complete random strangers showering me with kindness and motivation, kept me stead fast in my determination to accomplish the goal of loosing 30lbs before July.  You can see some of my progress photos here.  Fast forward to July, I had lost 35lbs.  I FELT AMAZING!!!! I had NEVER been in better physical condition in my life! My workouts were my escape, my gym was my happy place. My trainer, MJ, was my therapist.

Let me back up for a second though.  In November of 2017,  I was begging my husband to let me have my “mommy makeover” with liposuction because I was just at my wits end and I just didn’t wanna be heavy anymore.  I wanted to look/feel like my old self.  In reality, I just didn’t want to put in the work.  I just wanted a quick fix. To take, what I saw as, the “easy way” out. After the holidays,  I just realized there wasn’t gonna be an easy way.  I had to fight for what I wanted.  I had to prove that to not only my husband but to myself that I deserved this reward of a mommy makeover.

So, with the added bonus of knowing I was gonna get a a mommy makeover AND NOT have to get lipo, which if you have never seen the post op images of that, it looks like you went 10 rounds in the ring with an MMA fighter aka it ain’t pretty. Plus the surgery wasn’t;t gonna fix the real underlying issues.  My battle with how I saw food.  I saw food as just comfort.  I ate when I was bored, angry, happy, hungry, etc. And the type of foods I ate were AWFUL.  I used to have a VENTI Caramel Frappacinno with extra caramel drizzle from Starbucks, EVERDAY!!!! Yes, you read that right, EVERYDAY! Sometimes it would be TWICE A DAY! Mcdonalds fries were my crack (and they still are) but I HAD to have them! With a coke, of course.  So when you add the endless amounts of junk food I was eating because my attitude was (I’m already chunky, so what’s this gonna hurt) + not working out + meh YOLO.  I had the result of being the heaviest I had ever been.

In July 2018,  when I was down 35lbs since January of 2018, I FINALLY got my mommy makeover! I had to take about 8-10 weeks of recovery.  Even then,I wasn’t posting on my business social media or writing out backlogged blogs from past sessions.  Instead, I just binged watched Law & Order: SVU.  I think I watched seasons 1-12 during my recovery period.  Because at that point all I wanted to do was enjoy my shows, let my body recover and also just take care of my family.  I cherished this time.  I had worked my ass off and I felt like I definitely deserved the time off.  So fall came and went, I didn’t put out any specials during that time and I honestly was ok with that. I didn’t want to try and slap something together last minute and not give my best effort.

As 2018 was coming to a close, I told myself “Man, if I can give just 20% of my effort to my business like I did to working out, I will freaking crush it! Next year, 2019 is going to be my year to just really take my business to the next level. I’m gonna really take that #bossbabe and put it to work!”   So here we are,  writing my first blog in a VERY long time. Marketing myself more and trying to stay on top of my game.  Giving potential clients and existing clients something to brag about the next time someone asks for a photographer.  To really create an amazing experience for my clients and to give them the best quality work I can.  2019 is the year to put all my passion, heart and drive back into my business and into my clients. Thank you for all you who have supported me, continue to support me and have been there throughout the years! I couldn’t have made it this far without all of you! This year is MY year to take Amy Doak Photography to the next level, so I hope you will follow along and enjoy the ride with me!

    Paul | Buffalo Newborn Session

Baby Paul has a very special place in my heart. Not only because he is so super cute (obviously)  but his journey that he has been on touches me so deeply and reminds me that love has no limitations. That there are so many people out there who either just want love or to be loved and that everyone deserves to have their dreams come true.
Let me give a some background first.

His mom, Jennifer, or as my kids call her Ms. Jen, has been with our family for almost the past 2 years as my children’s speech therapist. I first met Jen on a cold winter day in February 2014. Since both of my kids needed speech therapy, she was with us at least twice a week for an hour each day. Needless to say I got to be pretty comfortable around Jen. When she would walk into my house and seen the results of a chaotic morning, she always reassured me that it wasn’t necessary to apologize for the disarray. Or when my kids happen to open the door excited to start their lesson while I just hopped out of the shower, hair still soaking wet. Or even when my kids would have a tantrum because they had to sit there and participate. Jen has seen the spectrum of emotions that my children can have. Never once has her kindness wavered. Her calming voice, her happy demeanor and her dedication to her job makes me so grateful that my kids have her in their lives.

Naturally seeing Jen so often lead to conversations about her, her life and her story and vice versa. Jen and her husband Brad, had been trying to have a baby on their own. After finding out that they were not able to have a baby on their own, they decided to try adoption. We would discuss what stage in the adoption process they were in and she gave me frequent updates whenever she had them. Months went by and it was radio silence from the adoption agency. But every time I spoke with Jen, she always had a smile on her face and just kept the faith that somehow her baby would come. They kept busy by renovating parts of their home, remodeling their stair case, just things to keep their minds off the limbo state they were in.

Well, after a session with Declan, she told me that their adoption agency called and they had a meeting with some potential birth parents! I was so excited for her and I could t wait until she got back from her trip to tell me how it went!

Well needless to say after almost a year of waiting for their baby to come, their son finally arrived. Baby Paul was brought back home to Buffalo and settled perfectly with Jen and Brad.

When Jen came to the studio for his newborn session, I could just see the pure love she had in her eyes for him. The way she cared Paul in his car seat into the studio, I could tell that motherhood looked absolutely perfect on her. I cannot tell how excited I was for Jen and her husband. I feel as though Jen’s story is one that millions of families can relate to.  Family isn’t created by the DNA that we may or may not share with someone or by the same last name.  Family is created with the bonds that we develop and nurture with another person. Being a family means giving unconditional love, compassion, and having a special place in your heart for another. No amount of biological substance can ever define what it means to be a family, only your heart can do that.

Even though Jen might feel like she’s the lucky one, I feel like Baby Paul is the lucky one. Knowing that Jen and Brad take the greatest privilege in being able to call him their son, makes me want to cry. He truly has made their entire life become brighter, better and more beautiful. Paul was definitely worth the worth.

      Gavin | Buffalo Newborn Session

I was lucky enough to meet Gavin and his parents by chance. I was picking up my kids from preschool and happen to see sweet Gavin all cozied and nestled in his car seat.  He was sound asleep even with all the noise and craziness that a preschool entails. I knew he would be such a great model! He did not prove me wrong! Gavin arrived to the studio with mom, dad and big sister in tow. Since Ava was in the same classroom as my youngest but just on opposite days, it worked out perfectly.

When doing newborn sessions with siblings, I like to photograph them first. I have found that kids have only a short attention span and will only give you so much before wanting to take off and okay with some toys!  I sat Ava in front of the camera and asked her to give me some happy smiles. Ava happily obliged. She was a natural in front of the camera. Since I work with studio lighting, this gets older kids get accustomed to the flash and click that they would hear when my flash is triggered. Since she did such an awesome job and Gavin was still feeding,  I wanted to have dad jump in for a few precious father-daughter pictures.
After eating, Gavin was ready to go! Fresh new diaper and some burping he was on his way to sleepytown. Or so I thought! Gavin gave me some of the most adorable wide eyed baby images, EVER! No tears, no crying but just taking in everything that was around him. It was so cute how big sister Ava was just loving on her new baby brother.  After we did some sibling poses, we moved right along to family poses with all 4 of them! Everyone did so great and the kids were so well behaved!  We moved on to some mom and baby shots, sweet Gavin all by himself and then we finished we some great father-son images.
As a newborn photographer, everyone has a different workflow that has been tried and tested throughout their career.  If someone isn’t cooperating at the time, that’s ok! We just move on and come back to it when they are more settled down and happier. Each newborn session with Amy Doak Photography, I ensure that we get parent shots with your little one and I make sure to capture their adorable little details; like their toes, their nose and ears. I don’t just capture these things because they are cute or trendy, etc. I capture them because I want YOU to remember how teeny tiny your child once was. These incredible moments will seem like a lifetime ago, but ou will always be able to look back and smile and think “oh he was so tiny! His whole body was the size of my forearm! Now he’s running around, playing, learning, and not as dependent as he once was.” Or even just to think of how their entire foot seemed like it was made to fit into the palm of
your hand perfectly.  Or how their entire hand held onto just your finger and it felt like the world was stopping spinning.
      Remember~~~
“To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.”

        Buffalo Newborn Photographer |Autumn

As a Buffalo newborn and family photographer, I am so honored that families entrust me with their most precious gifts, their children and their memories.  I cannot image doing anything else.  I am so thankful to have the most amazing job and even better clients.

Audrey and her beautiful family came to the studio to capture their addition to their family, Autumn.  Autumn was 2 months old when she came to the studio! Now even though 2 months is not considered a newborn by photography standards, I pride myself in capturing every beautiful moment that a baby gives me.  Autumn was super sleepy in the beginning of our session, which was awesome! I was able to capture her gorgeous eyelashes and face! As the session went along, Autumn slowly began to wake up.  Which led us to capturing her beautiful family and sister images! Audrey was so happy when I showed her the images, she started to cry a little. Happy tears of course! Those are the best kind of tears!

Olivia M. | Buffalo Newborn Photographer

Being a newborn photographer, I love shooting in my studio. I have everything within an arms reach and everything has its place. Yet sometimes, newborns are not able to get to my studio and that’s perfectly ok! I stuffed my car (a 4 door sedan) with EVERYTHING I would possibly need to do a newborn session and head to a clients home. Mom was pretty impressed with how much stuff (beanbag and all) I was able to squeeze into my vehicle. I am a self proclaimed expert packer stuffer, due to having 2 kids and prior military experience.

This gorgeous mama hand a beautiful home with lots of ambient light, problem was it was cloudy/rainy that day. No sun no problem. Well kind of. Remember how I said I was an expert packer stuffer? I even brought my studio lights and reflectors along with me. Because I’d rather be over prepared than not.

After several trips to the car, setup and a feeding later; we got started. Beautiful miss Olivia has the most gorgeous blue eyes that just loved to look at me, and I couldn’t get enough. Olivia was almost 4 weeks old at the time of the shoot and as a huge positive for photos of slightly older babies, you usually get lots of lovely eye open. Even though 10 days is the ideal age for newborn photos, I am able to get great images from any age.
